Inquiries
conducted by political scientist Raúl Salgado show that Pepinales
had already been founded before 1860. This can be concluded from documents
of the royal juridical and administrative district La Real Audiencia de
Quito. Under this name the Spaniards united the territories they had conquered,
thereby creating the Kingdom of Quito in 1563, which lasted until 1809,
when independence was proclaimed for the first time. Alausí respected
the new government of 1809. Consquently, in the first Constituitional
Assembly in 1811, the Alausí representatives promoted the idea
of Alausí being recognized as a province. This was the first time
Pepinales was mentioned as district of Sibambe, during colonial times
one of the most importand cities under administration of Alausí.
This proves that Pepinales did already exist in colonial times, though
there is no information on who gave it its name.
Pepinales is a community in the province of Chimbarazo in Ecuador, under
the adminstration of Sibambe in the canton Alausí. It is located
at kilometer 16 of the street connecting Alausí and Huigra, at
about 2000 meters above sea level. Temperatures in this region vary from
0 to 35 degrees Celsius; the average temperature is 16,07 degrees Celsius.
The climate is moderate; humid in the winter during rainy season and dry
in the summer during dry season, with heavy storms in august and september.
The next bigger city - at a distance of only 16 kilometers - is Alausí,
which has been declared cultural heritage of Ecuador due to its historic
buildings. Sibambe is just 7 kilometers away from Pepinales. Huigra, an
important village, lies 10 kilometers southeast. One of the most impressive
railroad tracks in Latin America – to Guayaquil - passes through
Huigra, just after having crossed the Devil`s Nose. To the south, there`s
the canton Chunchi, one of the nine cantons who form the province of Chimbarazo.
Due to massive migration to other parts of Ecuador but also to other countries,
Pepinales currently has 171 inhabitants. In recent years catholic festivities
have become impressive events. They provide an opportunity for sport events,
dancing and other activities. The most important religious ceremony takes
part from July 31st to August 4th every year, in honour of the village`s
patron saint San Alfonso María de Ligorio. This ceremony has become
a tradition and offers an opportunity for friends and relatives to meet
and for migrants to get involved in the development process of the village.
The history of Pepinales has been written down by political scientist
Raúl Salgado Espinoza. It was edited in 2005 by www.pepinales.com.
The Pepinales song, composed by Mr. José Durán, a former
teacher of our school Antonio Ricaurte, was first recorded and released
in 2006 by Mr. Bolivar Bravo from Pepinales and Mr. Raúl Maya.
Since 2002, the website of Pepinales – www.pepinales.com - , created
and designed by Mr. Tec. en Inf. Edinson Ricardo Salgado E. has been serving
as an international platform for contact and communication. We welcome
anyone who has the necessary knowledge and would like to join our team
and help us to make our online presentation a realiable and serious means
of communication.
